In February Edmonton got a chance to see the infamous documentary The Hooping Life when Carla Snow of Flowlab and Nina of Infinity Hoop Dance brought the show in town. Now the movie is making it’s way south and showing up in Calgary too! Check out the Facebook event page and save the night of March 22nd to see the screening of this piece of hooping history. In addition to the screening there will be music and performances throughout the evening. Safire will be performing her Multi Hoop Electro Swing act so if you missed it at the Cabin Fever event than now’s your chance!
I’m going to be in in Toronto and Ottawa this April and teaching a 4 hour 3D hooping workshop. This will be my first visit to this area so grab a ticket while you can. In this 4 hour workshop you’ll be introduced to the concept of 3D hooping and explore a series of moves that fit into this category of hoop dance. Flipping the hoop on it’s axis and capturing space using four different techniques include hinges, palm spins, contact flips and arm wraps. The video above has a sample of some of the moves we’ll be covering.
The Cabin Fever Electro Swing Event was excellent! A big thanks to James for bringing me in for the show. I did a newer and longer version of my Catgroove routine that now includes some double hoop moves and some more awesome triple hoop moves. Including a double chest roll while knee hooping! That move is by far the hardest one to master but I pulled it off and caught both hoops. I was a bit worried since I’ve been training at the gym this week and my arms are SO SORE! Luckily as soon as I get on stage and ready to perform all sense of pain always disappears instantly and rehearsed choreography sets in. I’m looking forward to the next electro swing party and am hoping to put together a new and unique act for that event as well.
My friend Lucky took some photos of the performance. Hope you like them!
The new Astral Harvest website is up! There will be tons of awesome DJs, performances, workshops and art around the festival. I went last year and had a blast. Not sure if I’ll be able to make it for this year, just got booked in Calgary on the Thursday so it would be a long drive to make up north for this one. We shall see, the party might still call me. ; )
Tease yourself with this wicked sampler video from last years festivities.

If you’re in the Calgary area I’ll be doing a performance in Calgary on Saturday night for the Electro Swing: Cabin Fever Event. Check out the Facebook page for more details on the event. I’ll be doing my LED multi hoop act to the oh so excellent Catgroove song by Parov Stelar. It’s an update version of the choreography I did for the Boomfestival in Portugal and will be super fun. Get off the couch and come on down and shake your booty to some excellent tunes.
Baxter of the Hoop Path will be doing workshops in Calgary and Edmonton Next Month. If you have never taken a workshop with Baxter I would strongly recommend it. His style of instruction is unlike any other that I have experienced. He truly guides you though a journey over the course of three days and you’ll discover things about your hooping that you may never have encountered on your own. I always walk away from his classes with a renewed perspective on hoop dance and on my personal practice. I’ve decided to give his workshop a try with 2 hoops this time to see if I can break through some barriers and limitations I have with twins. I’ll let you know how things go. Check out the Hoop Path website for tickets, he’ll be in Calgary the weekend of February 24th – 26th and in Edmonton March 2nd – 4th.
The Hooping Life Documentary is coming to Edmonton on February 11!
Infinity Hoopdance and Flowlab are teaming up to bring you this red carpet event featuring: entertainment by local performers, the screening of The Hooping Life and a huge prop jam afterwards. Open to all props!
Prop Rock brought together spinners and jugglers of all kinds for an evening performance showcase followed by a slammin’ dance party with excellent DJ’s. This event was the first of its kind in the Alberta spinning scene but is sure not to be the last. A big thanks to Carla Snow of Flowlab.ca for hosting this event.
