• Stollery Snowflake Gala – Edmonton Circus Entertainment

SaFire Dance Inc. provided a range of circus entertainment at this year’s Stollery Children’s Christmas Gala. Some of the acts we booked included stilt walking, juggling, fire eating, fire dancing, contact juggling, balloon twisting and LED hula hooping! The evening included tons of prizes, silent auctions, entertainment, music, dinner and a live band!  I think my favourite part of the night honestly though was when they were drawing the winner for a grand prize of a NEW CAR. Six people were on stage and each had a key with only one of the keys being able to unlock the door. Well… low and behold all six people tried and no one was able to open the door!! Everyone was shocked and confused.
They decided to allow each guest try their key again and sure enough one woman’s face was a mix of shock and horror as she realized that her key did in fact work! Can you imagine? You wouldn’t even be embarrassed that the key didn’t work the first time because you’d be so overjoyed with the fact that you won!
The event and decor were absolutely GORGEOUS and we look forward to working with the Stollery Children’s Hospital for next year’s gala event! The lovely gentlemen juggling and stilt walking is the oh so talented Nikolai Smith, an Edmonton based performer.

  • Hula Hoop Lesson: February 2013

Keep Both Hands on the Hoop!

This month’s hula hoop lesson is to challenge yourself to keep BOTH hands on the hoop the ENTIRE time you are hooping! It may sound easy enough but give yourself a minute or two and you’ll discover how difficult it is not to fall into your regular hooping patterns. Check out Safire’s video below for inspiration.

Also be sure to keep in touch with our Monthly Hoop Challenges on Hoop City to find new ways to challenge and explore your hoop dance practice.

  • Calgary Tattoo Festival 2012 – Fire Dancing, Stilt Walking and Hula Hoop Dancing

I had a blast this weekend working Calgary’s Tattoo Festival. I provided a comedy fire show everyday on the mainstage with fire eating, fire poi and fire hooping. The show also included some audience participation and tattoo related stand up comedy. My favorite part of this event is that all you have to do is ask people one question: “Do you have a tattoo?” and they instantly they start stripping. Who wouldn’t love an event like that?!?

In addition to the stage show I did some roving Stilt Walking and Hula Hooping. I made an effort to interact with and politely distract those who were in the chair getting inked. Everyone was grateful for the happy distraction from the feeling of being tattooed. One gentleman while in the chair stated; “You should be at all the Tattoo Conventions! This is great!” I was happy to help out, I know the feeling of getting inked and having a good distraction can help make the time go by much faster.

For those of you who saw my stage show, I was joking about my “patriotic” tattoo. ; )

  • Calgary Party Entertainment – Sweet City Celebrations

Last night was the evening filled with Calgary Party Entertainment at the Calgary 2012’s Sweet City Celebrations event. It was a massive party held at the BMO Centre. The party was in celebration of Calgary being named the Cultural Capital of the World for 2012.  I’ve found a few great photo streams from the event on Flickr if you missed the party and what to see what it was all about.  Check out the photos from the Stampede Promotion Committee and Jame’s Set to see how wild this party was! It was packed with Go-Go Dancers, Superheroes, Bollywood, Luchadors, Food Trucks, Living Statues, Circus artists, DJs, Cowboys, Dragons and amazing light and sound equipment.  The event included over 150 performance artists!

I performed roving entertainment for the line ups, the lobby area and the VIP guests upstairs before the doors opened to the event, welcoming guests to the evening and creating smiles during the wait. Here’s a few photos from the evening.
